Memory
Harry Smothers
(tune based on "A Photograph of You" by David Ackles)
It was a windy, warm October and we ran along
And while we rolled on hills of clover, we did nothing that was wrong
Still, you never were just another girl, though your father couldn't see
But we had our fun, didn't we, hon? It was just you and me...
You were a princess of the elves, and I was just a novice bard.
Your fam'ly didn't know how wild you were, you eas'ly slipped your guard.
We would then run off into the woods, I never meant you harm.
And then we'd tumble down upon the ground, and I would keep you warm...
One day you didn't come to meet me, and I longed to learn what was wrong
It couldn't be you stopped loving me, our feelings were too strong
I ran to your yard, was stopped by the guard; I can't say that he lied
He said you took sick, it came on quick, and by morning, you had died.
Now, it might be that you're really dead, or you might have gone away.
Your father might have caught on how you spent so many days.
But all I know is what I feel; I've done the best I can
And for all those days, so many ways, I was one good woman's man.
