Voyage of the Dawner

It was eight years ago, we bought a used ship
And stocked it the best that we could
A cut rate starmap was bought for our trip
And we had to believe it was good
That galaxy there looks like one on our map
But these star patterns don't appear here
But we should be close, so we have to go on
We just shrug and we swallow our fears

Chorus:

So it's on to the stars as we search for our new home
Oh, why are we not there yet?
There is no turning back, but the farther we roam
The farther it seems to get

I am writing these notes; there's nothing to do
We have fled from the dangerous Earth
We don't have a captain, or hint of a crew
Our star-chart has proven its worth
Our path seems to lead through that nebulous cloud
No one knows what a nebula is
We think that our new home lies through that shroud
So we aim, and we hope that we live

As we entered the cloud, our drive went out
Food and air went on battery power
We were drifting our way through the heart of the cloud
And we held to our panic by hour
If we only could hold on till we drifted through;
If our food would hold out a few weeks;
But the batteries died one by one, two by two
Nerves were frayed, but the hull didn't leak.

Our food was all gone, with some of us sick;
The first few to die were spaced.
We felt we were maybe a few thousand klicks
From the home that we sure would embrace.
The ship drifted ever more slowly, slowly now,
Decisions came hard, but we make.
We didn't space Marge; we proclaimed her a "cow"
So we carved her into roasts and steak

The ship has stopped drifting, my friends disappear
The edge is so close I can scream
I am now one of two, and I'm too weak from fear
A star shows its face off our beam.
Do not buy discount maps when you venture to space
They are made, not by facts, but by greed
Do not go out where the paths are not traced
Remember the Dawner, remember you well, and take heed.
