Low, M.D.<\/p>\n<p><font size=\"+2\"><\/font><font size=\"+2\"><b>Mental Fitness Tools<\/b><\/font><\/p>\n<hr width=\"75%\">\n<p><font size=\"+2\"><font size=\"+1\"><b>Angry Temper<\/b> &#8211; placing the blame on someone else for something they said, did, or did not do.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"+2\"><font size=\"+1\"><b>Average<\/b><br \/>\n&#8211; typical\/normal\/unexceptional.&nbsp; Nervous symptoms are average,<br \/>\nuniversal to human beings.&nbsp; Situations are average, the same event<br \/>\nhas happened tossomeone else.&nbsp; People are average, between the<br \/>\ntwo extremes of inferior and superior.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"+2\"><font size=\"+1\"><b>Calm begets calm<\/b> &#8211; work at composing yourself and it will have a ripple effect.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"+2\"><font size=\"+1\"><b>Change thoughts<\/b> &#8211; reject and replace thoughts.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"+2\"><font size=\"+1\"><b>Command muscles<\/b> &#8211; send orders to muscles: to stop an impulse, or to move when you are apprehensive.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"+2\"><font size=\"+1\"><b>Courage to make mistakes<\/b> &#8211; be brave enough to try, so what if the results are not perfect.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"+2\"><font size=\"+1\"><b>Distressing but not dangerous<\/b> &#8211; it feels frightening, threatening or terrifying (scary), but it really is not.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"+2\"><font size=\"+1\"><b>Endorse for effort, not the outcome<\/b> &#8211; give yourself a pat on the back for the energy you are putting forth, not the results of what you do.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"+2\"><font size=\"+1\"><b>Every act of self-control produces a sense of self-respect<\/b> &#8211; each time you command your muscles <i>not<\/i> to act and you do control an impulse, is <i>proof<\/i> you are indeed in control.&nbsp; Each case of impulse control is a small step towards building the <i>belief<\/i> &#8220;you are the master,&#8221; in control of your body and your mind.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"+2\"><font size=\"+1\"><b>Excuse rather than accuse<\/b> &#8211; release the judgement of right and wrong.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"+2\"><font size=\"+1\"><b>Fearful temper<\/b><br \/>\n&#8211; judging yourself wrong for something you said or thought; did or did<br \/>\nnot do; thinking you are not up to par with the rest of humanity.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"+2\"><font size=\"+1\">(a) <b>Firm decision steadies you<\/b> &#8211; reviewing choices is healthy, not being able to make up your mind in everyday matters keeps you tense.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"+2\"><font size=\"+1\"><b>Group-minded<\/b><br \/>\n&#8211; think about your behavior with regard to the people around you;<br \/>\nliving life in a fashion which creates peace for you and those around<br \/>\nyou.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"+2\"><font size=\"+1\"><b>Helplesslessness is not hopelessness<\/b> &#8211; you only feel helpless in a situation because you lack the knowledge of what to do; once you know, the tide can change.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"+2\"><font size=\"+1\"><b>Humor is our best friend, temper our worst enemy<\/b> &#8211; lighten up; don&#8217;t take yourself or the situation too seriously.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"+2\"><font size=\"+1\"><b>It is not how we feel, it is how we function<\/b> &#8211; you can function even when you are uncomfortable.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"+2\"><font size=\"+1\"><b>Know that you don&#8217;t know<\/b> &#8211; you can&#8217;t forecast the future; very few mortals possess unusual telepathic powers.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"+2\"><font size=\"+1\"><b>Lower your standards and your performance will rise<\/b> &#8211; learn to set realistic goals and boost your productivity; convert your worry energy to problem-solving energy.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"+2\"><font size=\"+1\"><b>Muscles re-educate the brain that there is no danger<\/b><br \/>\n&#8211; when you are apprehensive, move your muscles despite your fear.&nbsp;<br \/>\nWhen a muscular act carries you through the fear, when you have faced<br \/>\nit and it is behind you, it is proof you *can* do it.&nbsp; Your mind<br \/>\nreceives the message and imprints a new brain cell with &#8220;no danger<br \/>\ninvolved.&#8221;<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"+2\"><font size=\"+1\"><b>No right or wrong in the trivialities of everyday life<\/b> &#8211; as long as there are no moral or ethical issues involved, there is no explicit right or wrong.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"+2\"><font size=\"+1\"><b>Objective\/objectivity<\/b> &#8211; focusing on a material object in terms that can be measured and verified.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"+2\"><font size=\"+1\"><b>Part acts<\/b> &#8211; facing or doing things a step at a time.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"+2\"><font size=\"+1\"><b>Plan, decide, act<\/b> &#8211; weigh the options, make a decision, then follow through with action.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"4\"><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Sabotage<\/span><\/font><font size=\"+2\"><font size=\"+1\"><br \/>\n&#8211; when you are able and prepared, but not willing, to put your<br \/>\nknowledge into practice; when you do the opposite of what is good for<br \/>\nyou.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"+2\"><font size=\"+1\"><b>Self-led rather than symptom-led<\/b> &#8211; skeptical, pessimistic fear thoughts do not have to rule your life.&nbsp; You regulate your thoughts.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"+2\"><font size=\"+1\"><b>Striving to be exceptional and fearing we are not average<\/b><br \/>\n&#8211; trying to be a perfectionist; when you think you are not &#8220;as good as&#8221;<br \/>\nthe next person and constantly try to prove that you are acceptable.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"+2\"><font size=\"+1\"><b>This is a triviality compared to my mental health<\/b><br \/>\n&#8211; compare the importance of what is happening around you against the<br \/>\nimportance of the peace you are striving for; consider anything and<br \/>\neverything that upsets you in the perspective your inner harmony is of<br \/>\nprime importance; mental fitness comes first.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"+2\"><font size=\"+1\"><b>Trust your basic functions to carry you through<\/b> &#8211; confidence in the body&#8217;s ability to get you through.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"+2\"><font size=\"+1\"><b>You cannot control outer environment<\/b><br \/>\n&#8211; you only have control of yourself; you can influence and guide<br \/>\nothers, but never totally govern what they say, do, or do not do.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<hr width=\"50%\">\n<p><font size=\"+2\"><font size=\"+1\"><font size=\"0\">Excerpted with permission.
