Yesterday was another exhausting day. After the AHN meeting, I went to the transit offices to get some bus passes and tickets. When I had given out the passes (which are made out to specific individuals), I started handing out tickets, and it was a feeding frenzy. This was particularly disturbing because I had already given another of my speeches at the meeting that this was exactly what we DIDN’T want. Guess nobody heard me. Enough good things happened after that to calm me down… and then my one “working” computer stopped working. Apparently something (I’m usually very careful about this) deleted a necessary DLL file… my Windows loads and then tells me this file is missing, and can’t open Explorer.exe… which means I get my wallpaper but NOTHING on it, no task bar, no icons, nothing. I spent a couple hours trying to repair this problem (my Windows disk takes me through the repair process, and just when it’s about to fix it, dumps me to a C:> prompt and won’t do anything after that). Then I decided to turn on my new computer, just back from HP’s wizard labs from what I was told was going to be a motherboard repair. Hah. I don’t think they even did anything, it’s just as broken as it was before. I got online with a tech and he said it would require a call from a supervisor, which would happen in the next two business days. Nice of HP to give me a 90-day warranty… stopped myself from saying a very gripy, negative thing just then.
Fortunately, my old computer is a dual-boot with SuSE Linux. It’s not a finished installation (can’t use my printer and don’t have any of my games loaded, for instance), but it lets me online.
For those of you to whom the above is Technese, the bottom line is, I’m barely computered at all, and am almost ready to scream.
Someone called me just after noon, and was surprised I was still asleep. Well, after my surgery, and after all the years of doctor-enforced drugs I was on, and after the stresses of being up until 6 am trying to get my computers to work, I would say that 6 hours of sleep was not enough. It’s a miracle that I have as much ability to do things as I do, for which I am extremely thankful… but could stand a little less judgmentalism about my sleeping late.
Grrr
Hugs,
Me
